I saw this article this morning about one of my absolute favorite Tuscan towns. Apparently San Gimignano is full... there is nothing left in San Gimignano. At least between the hours of 8-3 - which is when all the tourists are there.
Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the most magical time to be in San Gimignano is about 6:30pm. The locals are home from work and just wandering around the streets. It's quiet, except for the occasional sound of church bells. There are few, if any, cars in the town's center. There are also few restaurants - but I can tell you about a great one in some guy's backyard a little bit off the beaten path. Ray and I love San Gimignano and hope that they find a way to balance the revenue from tourists with the beauty and all that is wonderful about the town.
Coincedently, last night Ray and I had melon wrapped in proscuitto (sadly, not true Italian prosciutto but a pale American imitation) and Italian pasta - penne with tomato (not as ripe as it should have been), basil (it will be better when it's the fresh basil from my herb garden), and buffalo's milk mozzerella (which one can get for about $6 at Trader Joes that is damn good.) Unfortunately the bottle of Vernaccia we bought in VA a few months ago was corked - otherwise we might have had some with dinner last night.

happy to read that you still remember Tuscany!
Can I say that the best way to see S.Gimignano is during the Spring, when the number of turist is lower & the weather became great?????
Sure, there are some restaurant, but I think that the best way is get a panino with "wild pig's prosciutto" & "pecorino's chees" (ops, but my stomach is making me crazy, while I'm writing this "american-italian") and eat it in the park, drinking chianti!!
Anyway... so is life!
ps: Ehi E., can you send me an e-mail from your correct address, because the other one is still out of work!
