
I read this article in the Economist a week or so ago... apparently there is this new technology that analyzes music to find out whether it conforms to some mathematical parameters and therefrom predicts whether the song is likely to be popular or not. From the article:
"According to Platinum Blue's software, called Music Science, for example, a number of hit songs by U2 have a close kinship to some of Beethoven' s compositions."
So weird and wild. Apparently some unknown French guy got a record deal because his song exhibited some of the characteristics that make a hit song.
For me though, it explains why even though I HATE that "You're Beautiful" song, I can't stop listening to it when it's on the radio.

i always had a sneaky suspicion that there was something eerily similar between "Elevation" and the Emperor's Concerto...

actually, i was listening to "You're Beautiful" this morning, and the progression of the chorus is slightly similar to that of the motif of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony...
