So... I'm totally in love with Meryl Streep. I had a chance to watch "Out of Africa" today on TCM, and what an unbelievable movie. Except for Robert Redford, who I can just never get into, the cast and the scenery were incredible.
I've only seen Meryl Streep in her campy trashy stuff... Death Becomes Her and Bridges of Madison County, and of course I want to see The Devil Wears Prada. This might be the first time I've seen her in a "real" film, and she does not disappoint.
I've seen a couple of great, old movies recently. I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof a week or two ago - and that's an amazing movie. Elizabeth Taylor is a shame now, but back in the day vavavavoom! What a hot babe. Paul Newman was incredible, as was Burl Ives (I know I know - the snowman from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!). Just a fantastic movie. And, of course, my all time favorite movie was on last night -and is on TCM again tonight - Gone with the Wind. There is no character in film history that represents, to me, an archtypical strong woman who is viewed in a negative light because of social double standards as much as Scarlett does.
Somehow, older movies are so much more satisfying to me. I really like character dramas - movies that focus on the personal development and interactions of a small group of characters. I don't care if anything major happens - watching characters evolve (or devolve) is really interesting to me.
Oh, I did see Meryl Streep in The Hours. She's a little overshadowed by Nicole Kidman (who was supurb!), but watching her watch Ed Harris's character fall apart is amazing.
